Is It Too Hot to Play Outside?

4 minutes

Learn how to tell if it’s too hot for your child to play outside. We’ll share easy tips to help keep them safe in the summer heat.

Is It Too Hot to Play Outside?

Playing outside is great for kids, but in the summer, high temperatures can be dangerous. Knowing when it’s too hot can help you keep your child safe and healthy.

What is “Too Hot” for Kids?

Most experts agree that once the heat index (how hot it feels with humidity) hits 90°F or higher, it’s best to stay inside or find shade. Young children are more likely to get too hot quickly, and they can’t always tell you when something feels wrong.

Signs it's too hot to play outside:

  • It feels hard to breathe in the heat
  • There’s no shade or breeze
  • Sweat dries quickly or doesn’t come at all
  • Your child looks flushed or tired quickly

Heat Safety Tips

If your child wants to play outside in the heat, try these tips:

  • Check the heat index before going out (apps like Weather or AccuWeather help)
  • Pick cooler times of day, like early morning or late afternoon
  • Dress them in light-colored, loose clothing
  • Offer  cool drinks, such as water, natural fruit juice and popsicles before, during, and after play
  • Take breaks in the shade or go indoors to cool down
  • Seek natural outdoor play areas, asphalt & concrete trap heat
  • Enjoy safe water play with a sprinkler or splashpad
  • Wear sun hats & sun protective clothing (or apply mineral-based sunscreen) if they’ll be in the sun for more than 15 minutes

Watch for Signs of Overheating

Your child may not say they feel bad, so keep an eye out for:

  • Red, hot skin without sweating
  • Headache or dizziness
  • Fast breathing
  • Tiredness or acting confused
  • Nausea or vomiting

If you notice any of these signs, bring them inside right away and call a doctor if they don’t start to feel better after a cool bath.

Final Tip

It’s okay to say “not today” when the heat is too high. Plan indoor fun, splash in the tub, or have a dance party instead. Staying safe in the summer heat is always the right call.
